We are delighted to have been part of the team collaborating with Redrow Homes at Chilton Waters, which supported NHBC Pride in the Job Quality Award winning manager, James Rogerson.
Van Elle installed the piles and Smartfoot® Precast Beams in this particular project, allowing Redrow Homes to build on quality foundations.
Thanks for the recognition James, it’s great to know that our clients are happy with the work we do for them!
Piling and ground engineering specialist Van Elle has seen its profits top £10m and turnover rise above £80 for the year to 30 April 2016.
In it’s latest financial results, shared exclusively with Construction News, the contractor saw turnover hit £84.2m, up by 14 per cent from £73.6m the year before.
This marks its third consecutive year of double-digit growth in turnover, which has nearly doubled in two years having stood at £46.6m in its 2013/14 results.
Pre-tax profit also saw a significant increase to £10.7m, up from £7m a year earlier.
The firm’s profit has now grown for six consecutive years.
In 2010 pre-tax profit stood at £400,000, growing significantly each year since to break the £10m barrier in its most recent accounts.
Van Elle’s pre-tax margin now stands at 12.7 per cent, up from 9.6 per cent it its previous results.
Commenting on the results, Jon Fenton, CEO of Van Elle, said: “The results demonstrate our aim of increasing revenue and profit through the continued expansion and improvement in our service offering to our clients,”
“This has been achieved through the development of our staff and a considered strategy in the procurement of plant, most notably in Rail and Open Site Piling which has been supported by the acquisition of additional land and further development of our facility in Kirkby-in-Ashfield.”
Van Elle has recently worked with ADI to provide the piled foundations for a brand new rotating big screen at Carrow Road, home of Norwich City FC.
8no. 350mm diameter SFA piles were installed to 14m depth using a Klemm 709 restricted access rig.
The big screen was unveiled by The Canaries during their first home game of the 2016/17 season against Sheffield Wednesday.
Located in the corner between the Barclay Stand and the South Stand, the innovative screen is the first of its kind to be used in world football. Not only does it rotate from side to side, but it can also change orientation from landscape to portrait.
It has already got many fans talking about it on social media and has been nicknamed ‘Screeny McScreenface’! Some have even gone as far as proclaiming it to be “NCFC’s best signing of the summer”!
We couldn’t have asked for better weather in the annual Dragon Boat Challenge at the Nottingham Riverside Festival on Sunday. Well, those with pink faces may say otherwise!
Van Elle’s entry “Fast as Elle” lived up to their name by putting in some pretty impressive times leading up to the semi finals. Unfortunately, fatigue kicked in after a long day and they just missed out on getting to the final by a split second! They returned with their heads held high in a very respectable 5th out of 44. Well done team!
Value engineering and reducing cost/programme through innovation has continued with our recent investment of 2 state-of-the-art 'Soilmec STM-20 Truck Mounted Piling Rigs'. Operating safely in a restricted site whilst minimising the ground preparation and the impact upon the remaining lanes of the highway means that we can maximise efficiency and complete our works as quickly as possible.
In a highways environment, these new rigs are ideal for installing signal/gantry piles, bridge abutment piles and lighting column piles.
Rig Operating Weight: 19,300kg
Maximum Pile Depth: 24.5m
Maximum Pile Diameter: 1800mm

This year was the 20th anniversary of the CN Awards and we were finalists for 'Specialist Contractor of the Year'. We didn't repeat last year's win but it was a fantastic event and we know what we need to work on for next time.
We have just invested in some new 1180mm rotary tooling for those big piling jobs! Added to our arsenal are 2 digging buckets, 1 core barrel and 1 rock auger. Buying our own piling tools rather than hiring them allows us to be more reactive and competitive because have more control over the coordination of the kit with our transport, and we do not have to cover the hire costs.
We were exhibitors at the UK's Largest Geotechnical Conference and Exhibition, ‘Geotechnica 2016’. The event was held at Brunel University in London and attracted many visitors. It was a great opportunity to network and educate our clients and potential clients on our geotechnical capabilities.
Thanks to the team who were there over the 2 days!
Each year we invite students from a local school in for work experience. The students spend their 2 weeks in a department which they have an interest in, and often get the chance to experience a few days in different departments. It gives them an idea of what working life is really like, and shows them the many different roles available in the world of construction.
It was nice to receive a letter of thanks from each of the students, it seems that they thoroughly enjoyed it!
We are delighted to have been shortlisted for the 'Outstanding Growth Performance' category in the East Midlands Chamber Awards 2016! We hope to emulate last year by taking the top spot in September, let’s hope our presentation knocks the judges’ socks off again…
As finalists for ‘Contractor of the Year’ & ‘Ground Investigation Specialist of the Year’ in the GE Awards 2016, we had high hopes for the big evening. Unfortunately, we didn’t take any trophies back with us but it was a great feat to make it this far! A good evening to be a part of.
After weather forecasts had us destined for a rainy couple of days, we were preparing ourselves for the worst! Luckily we were blessed and it stayed dry for the whole week! The crowds flowed in, filled to the brim with excitement, ready to see what the rail industry had to showcase.
The Van Elle Rail stand generated a huge amount of interest, with our brand new On-Track Volumetric Mixer being a key talking point. The Mixer batches concrete onsite, resulting in minimal materials wastage and huge cost savings. It had only arrived on the Monday and is the first of its kind in Europe! Visitors were also intrigued in the newly developed Rotary Percussive Drilling Mast attached to our tracked RRV. Completely engineered in-house, this unique large diameter drilling attachment can penetrate the toughest of ground conditions.
Other plant/equipment on the stand included the Archway Competitor Dart Rig (Geotechnical Dynamic Probing Rig), a Powerhand Clamshell, and a Land Rover RRV. Overall, it was a huge success and we look forward to going back next year!
Following our successes over recent years from land's End to John o' Groats, Van Elle has recently invested in 2 new locations to enable clients to visit us more readily to discuss their requirements and to create a local provision of our precast products to guarantee supply, maintain competitiveness and reduce our carbon footprint.
The South West, Wales and Scotland are growing markets for Van Elle and our unique service offering, particularly in terms of rail, highway, energy and housebuilding projects as well as our increased local presence, should enable us to maintain our focus on delivering a market leading service the UK over.
Our recent investment, the BIG Llamada P160TT CFA piling rig, got its first taste of action in Newcastle this month. A new student accommodation block required 359 No. 500mm diameter CFA piles up to 35m depth. The 160 proved its worth by completing the works with ease!
The NCE100 Companies of the Year Awards is a new and exciting approach to finding, assessing, recognising and then showcasing the most inspirational civil engineering practices operating in the global market today.
We were pleased to have been shortlisted in the “Technology Trailblazer” category with some very big industry names, but we were over the moon to have actually won it! This category recognised the companies demonstrating leadership in exploring where technology can take the industry forward in the future, through faster, more efficient methods, and this is something we continually strive for.
We believe that our dedication to developing new and innovative solutions, along with the collaborative work with suppliers to develop bespoke rigs, will drive the industry forward. Not only has this helped us win industry recognised awards, but also helps us to stand out from our competitors.
We also made it into the NCE Top 100 Companies of the Year, ranking 55th.
This year has started off well and there is plenty more to come. We thank our amazing employees for all their hard work and may the success continue!
The Top 200 fastest growing companies in the East Midlands, is a detailed financial analysis of the companies which are managed and run from the region. The report is provided by advisory firm Grant Thornton in partnership with the CBI, and covers Leicestershire, Northamptonshire, Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire and Lincolnshire. We were delighted to be placed 8th overall! Great news to add to the Profit 100 success.
We are delighted to have been placed number 19 in The Sunday Times BDO Profit Track 100! This league table ranks Britain’s private companies with the fastest-growing profits and our success is testament to the fantastic people we have here at Van Elle.
Investment in new plant and technology, along with maintaining the highest quality ground engineering solutions, helped our profits more than double to £7.2m in 2015. An outstanding feat!
We announced at the start of the year that our chosen charity this year at Van Elle will be raising funds for a little known condition called Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA). We aim to raise over £15k to be split between The SMA Trust (aiming to find a cure and treatment for SMA) and SMA Support UK (supporting those affected by SMA).
Today we were delighted to welcome Sam and Alex Bolton and their mum Sarah to spend the morning with us at Van Elle.
Our Group Director Vic Handley gave them a guided tour around our offices where they met a number of the team and found out more about the geotechnical industry and the various roles available to everyone, regardless of disability. Hardhats and hi-vis on, the boys who are often affectionately referred to as Ronnie and Reggie by their mum, were shown around our precast factory and yard. They saw our piling rigs in action and where our trucks are based and serviced.
“They are full of energy and positivity and are an inspiration to us all,” said Vic “we hope when they are older they will choose a career in construction, hopefully with Van Elle!”
In addition to raising much needed funds for SMA, Sam and Alex have always dreamed of going to Disneyland in Florida, so we surprised them and have made their dream come true by paying for them, their mum and carer to go for 2 weeks so they can realise that dream. We are all absolutely delighted for them and could not be happier to be a part of that dream!

There are few UK companies that can claim to have been as successful as Van Elle over recent years but it appears that the success story has only just begun with yet more award nominations and finalist announcements of late.
Shortlisted in the new NCE100 Awards, 2 categories of the Ground Engineering Awards and the 2016 Construction News Awards, we are very excited that our hard work, innovation, investments, financial and project successes continue to be recognised by our peers and the wider industry.
With new technologies, plant, training, resources and premises continually being invested in, we are looking forward to being able to offer our expertise in value engineering on some of the UK's largest and most complex infrastructure projects in coming years.
It was time for Van Elle to get suited and booted for this year’s CN Specialists Awards, which was held at the London Hilton on Park Lane. We were finalists in 2 categories; Ground Engineering Specialist of the Year and Specialist Contractor of the Year. Unfortunately we didn’t take the top spot in either of these awards however we were highly commended for Specialist Contractor of the Year, a huge compliment!
Over the past few years, Carillion and its client partners have had a dedicated event to focus on safety in the rail industry. This year it was time for Safe Start 2016 and Van Elle were once again involved! It was the ideal opportunity to bring everyone together to discuss current projects, look at safety, and see where future improvements can be made.
Safe Start 2016 was hosted at Donington Park where there were 80 exhibitors and over 700 delegates attended.
We brought one of our state-of-the-art RRVs (Road Rail Vehicle), which is powerful, reliable, and comes with a number of safety devices. It was a major attraction which prompted many inquisitive questions and even few photos!
It was good to see a lot of familiar faces and also some new ones too. Our thanks goes to Carillion for hosting the well-run event and we look forward to next year.
Van Elle's approach to taking responsibility for our actions doesn't start and finish with getting the job done safely, on programme and with unrivalled quality. Our respect for, and relationship with, our staff, clients, fellow contractors, suppliers, engineers and members of the public is essential to maintaining a well run site and enables us to concentrate on the ground engineering. Maintaining and, when possible, improving the environment in which we work is also a major consideration, not only for our company image and those with whom we work but for local residents, wildlife and future generations.
We are very proud to announce that having already been awarded the ISO9001, ISO14001 and OHSAS18001 certificates in the first week back at work in the New Year, following a successful audit, we are now approved members of the 'Considerate Constructors Scheme' demonstrating to all how committed we are to this concept and our additional responsibilities on site.
Whilst the majority of the construction industry closes down over the Christmas/New Year period, rail continues to be busy, utilising this time to carry out essential infrastructure works under possession and blockades. As the UK’s largest independent and most capable specialist ground engineering contractor, Van Elle Rail successfully completed a number of challenging on-track rail projects safely, on programme and to the clients’ delight throughout the holidays. These include:
Project Title: Great Western Electrification Programme.
Principal Contractor: Amey
Client: Network Rail
Plant Used: 5No. T10,000FS Colmar RRVs and 2No. Doosan Excavators.
Projects Details: The installation of 26No. bored concrete foundations and 15No. CHS piles to form OLE stanchion bases on route section 1.
Project Title: Gidea Park Station.
Principal Contractor: Lorclon
Client: Network Rail
Plant Used: 2No. T10,000FS Colmar RRVs.
Projects Details: The installation of 323.9 CHS piles (spliced due to overheads and live lines).
Project Title: Maidenhead Embankment Stabilisation.
Principal Contractor: Balfour Beatty
Client: Network Rail
Plant Used: 5No. T10,000FS wheeled RRVs and 2No. T10,000FSC tracked RRVs, specialist Movax, BSP & Daedong attachments and 5m purpose-built rhino horns.
Projects Details: This was an extremely challenging project which no-one else in the industry could have undertaken. We installed 212No. sheetpiles to 10m from on-track, along the top of an embankment with a maximum offset of 7m. Prior to driving the piles, Van Elle carried out significant deveg. and preparation works.
The client and Principal Contractors were extremely pleased with Van Elle’s performance on each of the projects. As well as the challenges posed by the programmes and complexities of the projects themselves, the logistics of servicing these 3 large schemes with the correct plant delivered at the right times was quite a feat in itself. With Van Elle’s in-house haulage fleet carrying out more than 40 wagon movements and no missed delivery/collection windows, we were able to maintain the programme and start/completion dates as planned.
With planning being key to any rail project’s success and a full order book up to the 24th December prior to these projects beginning, our accomplishment over the Christmas period is all the more impressive and testament to the quality and professionalism of our site teams and office staff. A Van Elle team of more than 100 worked to complete these schemes over the 2 week period.
Following a successful audit carried out in December 2015, we are pleased to announce that Van Elle has been awarded ISO 9001:2008, ISO 14001:2004 and OHSAS 18001:2007.
Although successfully audited and accredited by a number of organisations, clients and associations on an annual basis, this award is affirmation that our management systems are comprehensive, robust and ensure the health, safety and wellbeing of our employees, the environment and the quality of the services we provide to our clients.
Amazingly, these certifications were achieved in just 8 months which is testimony to the existing processes and procedures already in place.
