King post wall

King post walls

King post walls are a fast and cost-effective way of building permanent or temporary retaining walls, formed by installing steel H-beams into rotary bored piles. Concrete or timber panels are subsequently installed between them to allow earth retention.

Benefits

  • Fast, quiet and virtually vibration-free
  • Cost-effective alternative to sheet piling or contiguous, secant or sheet piled walls

Applications

  • Retaining structures
  • Excavations

Technique

CFA piles are installed along the line of the wall, with spacing dictated by the width of the wall panels. A steel H-beam is installed into the wet concrete of each pile. Beams are left standing ‘proud’ of the top of the piles to the height of the wall, and the timber or concrete panels are then inserted between the webs of the beams.
