Helical piles to leave no environmental legacy following Tokyo Olympics

Following a successful partnership with client ESG on the London 2012 Olympic Games, ScrewFast delivered helical piles for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, which begin on 23rd July 2021.

The team – now part of our Specialist Piling division – designed, manufactured, shipped and installed 428 helical piles for the games in 2019, before COVID-19 postponed proceedings.

The piles, connected into different grillage arrangements from single piles up to eight pile groups, including vertical and raked piles, support lattice towers which in turn hold up frames for the ballistic nets, combined and finals ranges in the Olympic shooting venues.

During the 17-week programme, three ScrewFast staff, Will Harris, Matt Woods and Rob Day, visited Tokyo to install the piles, with support from a local team of labourers, excavators and telehandlers.

Once the games conclude the helical piles will simply be removed, leaving no negative environmental legacy.
