As part of our ongoing social value commitments and in support of the Southern Framework with Network Rail, we have recently delivered a number of initiatives aimed at supporting local schools and creating meaningful community impact near one of our project sites.
Inspiring Future Careers at Skinners’ Kent Academy
Van Elle together with representatives from the Southern Renewals Enterprise (SRE), visited Skinners’ Kent Academy to deliver an educational careers workshop for Year 10 and Year 12 students, engaging approximately 60 pupils interested in construction and trade-based careers.
The sessions provided an introduction to the construction industry, highlighting the wide range of career pathways and routes into the sector.
As part of the workshop, we also shared insights into our current works, focusing on the purpose and importance of soil nailing.
To reinforce their learning, students took part in a practical team exercise to recreate an embankment using model soil nails, with our team explaining the significance of each component in maintaining slope stability and supporting critical infrastructure.
The workshop concluded with an opportunity for students and staff to experience the Movax simulator, an interactive training tool that replicates the operation of specialist piling and foundation equipment, providing valuable hands-on insight into modern construction techniques.
Supporting Outdoor Learning at Ifield School and Sixth Form
Alongside our educational outreach activities, we were pleased to support Ifield School and Sixth Form through the donation of materials, including 20 railway sleepers, as well as building sand and stone.
These materials will be used to create new benches and picnic tables within the school’s woodland area, while also helping to refurbish and extend existing pathways.
This contribution will enhance the school’s outdoor learning environment, providing pupils with greater opportunities to learn, explore and develop important life skills in a natural setting.
Through these initiatives, we are proud to deliver social value that extends beyond our project works, supporting education, inspiring future talent, and creating lasting benefits within the communities in which we work.
