Specialist Piling Team Completes Challenging Project at Rylands Building

Last month, our specialist piling team successfully completed an extremely challenging project for Domis Construction at the historic Rylands Building in Manchester City Centre.

The ambitious endeavour required expert precision and logistical expertise to reinforce the building’s foundations in preparation for a major redevelopment.

The project involved the installation of 250No. 350mm bored-cast-in-place piles, with depths varying between 9 to 18 metres. These new foundations form a crucial part of the wider strengthening works, designed to support the construction of a four-storey extension above the existing roof deck.

Once completed, the new development will provide a mix of retail, leisure, and commercial office spaces, enhancing the city centre’s business landscape.

One of the most significant challenges faced by the team was navigating restricted access to the site. All plant and equipment had to be brought in through a confined 4.3m x 2.5m opening, using only a 4.4T winch. This required meticulous planning and careful disassembly of rigs to facilitate smooth entry and exit.

Despite the complexities of operating in a busy city-centre environment and working within a tight schedule, the team delivered exceptional results. In addition to installing the 250No. piles, the project included 8No. dynamic tests and 3No. static tests, ensuring the highest standards of safety and performance.

Thanks to the dedication and expertise of all those involved, the project was completed ahead of schedule, demonstrating the team’s commitment to excellence in foundation engineering.

Well done to everyone who contributed to the success of this challenging yet rewarding venture.
