CHS pile installation for TRU East OLE foundations as part of rail electrification project
5th December 2025

Our Rail team is making excellent progress on the TransPennine Route Upgrade (TRU) East, delivering the OLE foundation package on behalf of Murphy as part of the alliance with Network Rail, VolkerRail, Siemens and Systra.

As part of the wider York to Leeds improvements, this programme will deliver faster, greener and more reliable journeys across the Pennines.
We’re supporting the line’s electrification with Down the Hole Hammer drilling and CHS (Circular Hollow Section) pile installation, which is now well underway.

This includes pre-boring and installing CHS piles to facilitate future OLE installation, with 147No. foundation locations drilled to depths between 4.5 and 8.0 metres, after which 610mm and 762mm CHS piles are installed.

An additional signal foundation is also being installed as part of the works. Pile depths are tailored to ground conditions, including minimum embedment and rock sockets where required.

Works are being delivered safely and efficiently during mid-week and weekend possessions to minimise passenger disruption.

The programme is supported by our specialist rail fleet and experienced operational teams, including the use of Colmar T12000FS and Colmar T10000FSC with bespoke attachments: VESPA Piling Mast, Movax SG65 and BSP DXRT30.

Using Van Elle’s purpose-built VESPA masts allows for safe operation with Network Rail product-accepted attachments and a proven methodology.

Excellent work from everyone involved as we continue to contribute to the delivery of this major infrastructure upgrade.
