Guildford Depot

Van Elle was selected to deliver ground improvement works at Guildford Depot, marking the team’s first installation of hybrid columns. These works supported the development of a multi-storey car park, storage facilities, tanks, and enhancements to external areas.

Project Background

  • Appointed by McLaren.
  • Our scope of works included the installation of 1200No. hybrid columns and 1400No. rigid inclusions to support the main foundations and external areas of the new council waste depot.

Challenges

A key challenge faced on this project was the implementation of hybrid columns, a technique which had not previously been completed by the ground improvement team. As a new technique within our operations, it required careful planning and coordination to ensure successful execution.

Additionally, the scale and nature of the works required a significant amount of plant on site. Managing logistics, space constraints, and maintaining a safe and efficient working environment demanded close collaboration and proactive site management.

Van Elle Solutions

A key solution was the adoption of hybrid columns, which proved to be a cost-effective ground improvement method tailored to the site’s specific needs. Their use was particularly beneficial given the extensive drainage infrastructure planned for installation following the completion of piling, as hybrid columns offer minimal disruption to below-ground services.

The full package of ground improvement works, including the installation of both rigid inclusions and hybrid columns, were delivered within an efficient 8-week programme, meeting project timelines and supporting the broader construction schedule.
