Strata Geotechnics was appointed to undertake a detailed ground investigation at M62 Junction 24 in support of proposed highway improvements.
Project Background
- Appointed by National Highways.
- The scope of works comprised 4 No. boreholes to depths up to 25m using a combination of Dynamic Sampling and Rotary Coring techniques, 3 No. window sample boreholes to depths up to 5m, and a hand-dug trial pit to facilitate service location. Additional works included Standard Penetration Tests (SPTs), Hand Shear Vane (HSV) testing, environmental sampling, and the installation of 3 No. combined groundwater and ground gas monitoring wells.
- The investigation was undertaken to provide comprehensive geotechnical and environmental information to inform the design and development of the scheme and reduce ground-related risks during future project phases.
Challenges
The project presented several challenges requiring careful planning and coordination.
Access to the investigation locations on both the northern and southern sides of the junction required traffic management arrangements and a project organised temporary bus stop re-location to ensure safe access and egress for personnel, plant and equipment.
2 No. borehole positions were located within heavily vegetated areas, restricting access to the proposed investigation points and requiring additional preparatory works before drilling activities could commence.
The presence of overhead power lines in certain locations also introduced further safety considerations, necessitating strict controls to ensure all works were undertaken in accordance with relevant safety requirements.

Traffic management measures, including a planned temporary bus stop re-location, enabled safe access to investigation locations as well as coordination with the de-vegetation team providing access to restricted borehole positions, while GS6 posts and strict safe working procedures were implemented to manage risks associated with overhead power lines.
Delivered over a four-week programme, the investigation provided a comprehensive understanding of the site’s ground conditions.
