NCW2025: Myth-Busting Challenging Stereotypes in the Industry

As part of National Careers Week, we’re addressing some of the biggest misconceptions about working in construction, particularly in the ground engineering sector. Many of these misconceptions apply to the wider construction industry as well.

A common perception is that construction is a male-dominated field, requiring only physical labour and limited to on-site roles. However, the reality is quite different.

The industry is diverse, dynamic, and full of opportunities for everyone, offering careers that range from hands-on site work, like piling operatives, to technical roles and office-based positions.

To challenge these outdated stereotypes, we’re showcasing examples from a variety of roles within our business to debunk common myths and highlight the exciting, inclusive career paths available in our industry.

Myth 1: “Construction is just for men”

Reality: The construction industry is open to everyone. While historically male-dominated, more women are now in roles such as site managers, engineers, construction administrators, and health and safety. Companies are promoting diversity through initiatives and mentoring programmes to create a more balanced workforce.

Example: Claire Garett, our Ground Improvement Director, leads a team that delivers advanced techniques like vibro stone columns and rigid inclusions. Sarah Flint, Our Assistant HSQE Manager is responsible for ensuring that sites are safe and adhere to established processes, upholding high standards of safety, efficiency, and compliance.

Myth 2: “You don’t need qualifications to work in ground engineering”

Reality: While there are entry-level opportunities in ground engineering, many roles require formal training, certifications, and degrees. The industry values skilled professionals, from geotechnical engineers with university degrees to piling operatives with specialist training. Apprenticeships, technical courses, and on-the-job learning all play a crucial role in developing expertise.

Example: Shannon, a Geotechnical Engineer, applies her university education to assess soil conditions to ensure the design of safe, efficient groundworks that support major infrastructure projects.

Meanwhile, Billy, Works Manager gained his qualifications through industry training and now leads on-site teams to deliver complex foundation solutions.

Myth 3: “Construction is only about being on-site”

Reality: While construction sites are a vital part of the industry, many roles are office-based or and combine site visits with office work.

Careers in project management, design, procurement, quantity surveying, HR, marketing, and finance all play essential roles in keeping projects running smoothly.

Example: Our Senior Design Engineer, Martin Grainey, plays a key role in developing detailed geotechnical plans and designs. He collaborates closely with engineers and estimators to ensure that foundation requirements, soil conditions, and structural integrity are meticulously addressed, ensuring safe and stable construction.

Myth 4: “HR is not important in construction”

Reality:  HR professionals are integral to the success of the construction industry. They play a key role in talent recruitment, employee well-being, training, and ensuring compliance with legal and regulatory requirements. Their expertise helps build strong, efficient teams that drive project success.

Example: Amber North, our HR Advisor, is essential in supporting both employees and management. She provides expert guidance on HR policies, procedures, and best practices, ensuring that our workforce remains well-managed, compliant, and motivated.

Myth 5: “Accounting and finance don’t play a major role in construction”

Reality: Managing budgets, forecasting costs, and ensuring profitability are essential aspects of any construction project, making finance and accounting teams integral to success.

Example: James, our Senior Finance Assistant, works closely with our teams to ensure they have the finance they need to deliver their work. He also prepares monthly management accounts to ensure that accurate and up-to-date information is available to divisional directors and is a friendly key point of contact for any questions our operatives may have.

Myth 6: “Purchasing is just about ordering materials”

Reality: Procurement professionals strategically source materials, negotiate contracts, and manage supplier relationships to ensure projects have the right resources at the right time.

Example: Becky, our Assistant Procurement Manager, works with approved suppliers, to secure the best deals on plant and materials while maintaining sustainability and quality standards.

Myth 7: “IT has little to do with construction”

Reality: IT is important in construction, helping with things like protecting data, managing information, using digital tools for design, running systems that keep projects organised, and ensuring smooth communication through emails, phones, and tablets.

Example: Dale, our IT Support Manager, oversees the IT support team, ensuring smooth technology operations. He handles troubleshooting, service requests, and maintains IT infrastructure, ensuring seamless communication across devices like phones, tablets, and email.

Myth 8: “Construction careers have no progression opportunities”

Reality: Construction offers clear career paths, from apprenticeships to leadership roles, with opportunities for continuous learning and professional development.

Example: Ian who started as a Site Labourer, trained as a Project Manager and now leads multimillion-pound projects as our Operations Director
