Recently, Van Elle Rail completed critical works at Mountfield Tunnel acting as Principal Contractor.
The project involved the reformation of approximately 115 metres of crest ditching using a 1.5-tonne excavator. Prior to the ditch works, a full topographical survey was undertaken in line with design requirements to confirm the correct ditch depths and distances from the Network Rail boundary fence.
To facilitate safe operations, the area above the tunnel portal was levelled to allow for the safe movement of the excavator. The full reformation of the ditch was then completed using both mechanical excavation and handheld tools, ensuring accuracy and compliance with the design.
Concrete Canvas was installed along the final 10 metres of the ditch to provide a durable finish leading to and connecting with the existing flume. All necessary devegetation works were also carried out around the portal, crest, and flume areas.
A tension rope system was used to safely traverse the flume for brickwork repairs and debris clearance. All flume-related works were undertaken by qualified IRATA-trained personnel, with full safety procedures followed and all staff credentials verified prior to commencement.
The flume was thoroughly cleaned to restore free water flow, with moss and historic debris removed. Brickwork repairs were completed where necessary, including the replacement of approximately 14 bricks. All tools used on site were approved and fully insulated in line with safety standards.
Another safe and successful delivery by the Rail Division, demonstrating our continued commitment to quality, safety, and collaboration across all stages of delivery.
