Recognising Harvey’s Journey in Procurement

Apprentice Wednesday Apprenticeship NAW

As part of National Apprenticeship Week 2026, Apprentice Wednesday celebrates the role apprentices play in developing future talent.

At Van Elle, apprenticeships are a key way we invest in our people, and Harvey’s journey is a great example.

Harvey joined Van Elle in September 2023 as a Procurement Apprentice and is now completing his CIPS Level 3 End Point Assessment. Over the past two years, he has developed practical skills in supply chain management while working towards a recognised professional qualification.

Harvey reflects on why he chose an apprenticeship and joined Van Elle:

“Choosing an apprenticeship was the right decision for me, as I’m a practical, hands-on learner and value gaining experience on the job. The apprenticeship felt like the right stepping stone for me, especially as I originally wanted to become a rig driver, so gaining on-the-job experience was important.

I was drawn to procurement because I enjoy the idea of negotiating with suppliers and building strong relationships across the business. When I joined in September 2023, everyone was helpful and welcoming, and the team were very supportive. Lisa, my manager, made it easy to integrate into the team, and I’ve had great support from everyone alongside my studies.”

Balancing study with day-to-day responsibilities, Harvey has grown in confidence and capability, taking on greater responsibility within the team.

He has benefited from dedicated mentoring, structured training, and hands-on experience, enabling him to apply lessons from his studies directly to his role.

Harvey shares his experience of combining study with work and applying his learning:

“The CIPS Level 3 qualification combines study during and outside of working hours with independent learning. I’ve been able to apply this directly in my role, particularly by building confidence in public speaking and developing skills such as negotiation and presenting data. Balancing work and study has been challenging at times, but Van Elle have been very supportive, with Lisa and my college tutor, Alex, working closely together to support me throughout my journey.”

Harvey’s progress has been recognised by his apprenticeship tutor, Alex, who praised his commitment, attitude, and engagement:

“Over the last 18 months he has gone from strength to strength; not just with knowledge and skills, but with behaviours too. Confidence is something I have seen grow month on month with Harvey and I am proud to be a part of how this has grown.

He has shown great core values throughout his learning journey and is fully aware of the organisational values which impact what he does day to day and he consistently demonstrates these values, acting as an excellent representative of the Van Elle brand”.

As he completes his apprenticeship, Harvey is well placed to continue growing within procurement and reflects on the journey and opportunities the programme has provided:

“Completing my apprenticeship has been an incredible experience. I’ve gained real life skills, grown in confidence, and learned so much about procurement and the wider business. I’m excited for the next step in my career and grateful for all the support I’ve had along the way.”

Apprentice Wednesday is about showcasing the impact of apprenticeships. Harvey’s story shows that, with the right support, dedication, and ambition, apprenticeships can unlock real career opportunities.
