Ground Improvement works under way on Crown’s largest manufacturing facility for beverage cans in Europe

economical foundation solutions Ground Improvement sustainable Vibro stone columns

Work has commenced on the installation of over 16,000 No. vibro stone columns to support Crown’s largest manufacturing facility for beverage cans in Europe.

Van Elle’s ground improvement team began installing the vibro stone columns for main contractor ISG at the end of July.

The 625,000 square feet project located in Peterborough, involves over 16,000 No. top feed vibro stone columns being installed, using four of the Group’s low emission Vibro stone column rigs, as well as two pre-boring rigs.

The new manufacturing facility has a complex foundation and slab design tailored to accommodate various manufacturing equipment and processes.

The stone columns will be spaced on varying grids to provide uniform bearing capacities ranging from 60kN/m2 to 150kN/m2, supporting the proposed foundations and ground bearing slabs.

The 12-week programme is on schedule and is due to finish at the end of September.

Vibro stone columns are one of the UK’s most commonly specified ground improvement methods.

They offer a highly economical and sustainable alternative to piling and deep foundation solutions. Removing the need to bypass problem ground by densifying and strengthening weak or poorly compacted soils in situ.
