Major project underway to support new warehousing complex

Ground Improvement rigid inclusions

Work has recently commenced on one of our largest rigid inclusion projects to date, to support a new warehousing complex in Portgordon, Scotland.

Van Elle’s ground improvement team began installing rigid inclusions for main contractor, Robertson Group in July.

Rigid inclusions are a ground improvement technique that improves settlement performance, increases load-carrying capacity, and reduces the compressibility of poor soils. They are suitable for use in warehouses, industrial and commercial sheds and embankment support for infrastructure.

Once complete the project will support the expansion requirements of William Grant & Sons, a renowned premium spirits company.

The scope of work includes the installation of more than 15,150 rigid inclusions across four whisky storage warehouses, covering an area of 535,000 square feet and designed to support both the foundations and the floor slabs.

The 34-week project is on schedule for completion in February 2024 and utilises one of Van Elle’s fleet of specialist rigs.

Claire Garrett, Ground Improvement Director, said: “We are delighted to build on our relationship with Robertson Group to deliver the foundation support for their new warehousing project.

“Our team’s experience in ground improvement solutions will be an asset to the project’s success, further supporting our track record in industrial and logistics warehouses.”
